Biblical Standpoint of Anger
ANGER
1. Definition of anger: a strong feeling of annoyance, displeasure, or hostility
Anger is not always sin. There is a type of anger of which the Bible approves, often called “righteous indignation.”
*Anger has been said to be a warning flag—it alerts us to those times when others are attempting to or have violated our boundaries.
What does God say about anger in the scripture?
Unrighteous:
Galatians 5:19-21 Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, idolatry, sorcery, hatred contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, envy, murderers, drunkenness, revelries, and the like; of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.
Galatians 5:22-25 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control, against such there is no law, and those who are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.
Ecclesiastes 7:9 Do not hasten in your spirit to be angry, For anger rests in the bosom of fools.
Righteous:
Psalm 7:11 God is a just judge, and God is angry with the wicked every day.
1 Kings 11:9-10 So the Lord became angry with Solomon, because his heart had turned from the Lord God of Israel, who had appeared to him twice, and had commanded him concerning this thing that he should not go after other gods; but he did not keep what the Lord had commanded.
Proverbs 19:11 The discretion of a man makes him slow to anger, and his glory is to overlook a transgression.
When anger is manifested in the form of pain which is not of God, it can cause a lot of turmoil in everyday life. It is ok to be angry but your actions behind it, is what makes the difference in reference to if its anger or righteous indignation. Many people think that being angry is ok since, violence didn’t stem from it in a particular situation. But we have to realize that when we don’t walk according to God’s will and His purpose you can set yourself up for destruction. Anger is a lot of times overlooked because action didn’t fall behind the emotion, but often times it is just suppressed waiting for that opportune time to surface and normally it is without warning. Naturally, when anger does surface and not out of just righteous indignation, it is a byproduct of pain. Pain is formed from a root problem that is normally not known of, or if known has not been dealt with properly, to release the pain and to forgive. Forgiveness and deliverance is a very important element when wanting to be anger and pain free. Pain from your past is usually in your subconscious mind, not realizing that it even exists until it is too late. So by the time a person realizes they have pain, it is usually after anger has took control and you have reacted out of the emotion that has left you in a state of shock because of an action you may regret. That’s why it is so important to understand what the scripture says about being angry but sin not. Forgiveness has to take place in order to press through and overcome deep rooted pain. Deliverance, Forgiveness, and repentance is a must when wanting to be relieved from anger. It starts with self-will, the will power to want to change and let go of things that have hindered a life that only God intended to live in true peace and joy. I only know this because I was once there and now live a life of true peace and joy. I have been delivered, I have forgiven, and I have repented for my iniquities.
